It is advised that elastomeric impression materials be disinfected by immersion in glutaraldehyde [7,11] or sodium hypochlorite.
How do I clean up Accu-Cast alginate? Scrape off whatever alginate you can by hand. Make a pretty strong solution of baking soda and water. Soak the affected area with the baking soda/water solution and leave for about 30 minutes. With a stiff brush, scrub the affected area.
The impressions made with alginate can be disinfected using 2% glutaraldehyde solutions or 0.5% sodium hypochlorite, guaranteeing the inhibition of bacteria in just 5 minutes, without altering their dimensional stability.
Remove the set impression with a quick snap, breaking the seal between the oral tissues and the tray by gently pushing with the finger or applying air directly into the buccal sulcus and then pulling with downward pressure. Rinse the impression with cold water to remove any surface saliva, debris, or blood.
Various studies found that the most commonly used disinfectant is sodium hypochlorite, although iodophor is the most suitable disinfectant for most of the impression materials.
Disassemble the trays completely. Immerse the disassembled trays in a freshly prepared cleaning bath of the specified concentration for the period specified by the manufacturer. Clean the surfaces with a soft brush until there is no visible contamination. Clean the holes separately with a fine brush.
On removal of an impression or appliance from the mouth, immediately rinse under cold running water to remove saliva, blood and debris, and continue rinsing until visibly clean. Disinfect the impression or appliance by immersion in a solution suitable for this purpose, following the manufacturers instructions.
