Kent is going to talk to us about using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, or XPS, for industrial problem solving. Before we started I will give you a bit of Kents background. Limit of detection (LOD) is the level at which a measurement has a 95% probability of being greater than zero. In the National Exposure Report, the LODs for each chemical and survey period are provided in a footnote to each data table. LOD values may change over time due to improvements in analytical methods.
The detection limit is approximately 0.1% atomic. XPS is more sensitive for higher atomic number elements. The energy resolution of the spectrometer is sufficient to resolve differences in binding energy for different chemical bonds.
Traditional XPS is sensitive to detect the elements on the surface with 210 nm depths.
X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) or Electron Spectroscopy for Chemical Analysis (ESCA) is a technique which analyzes the elements constituting the sample surface, its composition, and chemical bonding state by irradiating x-rays on the sample surface, and measuring the kinetic energy of the photoelectrons emitted
Because XPS is a surface technique, there is a limited amount of organic information XPS can provide. XPS is limited to measurements of elements having atomic numbers of 3 or greater, making it unable to detect hydrogen or helium. XPS spectra also take a long time to obtain.
The intensity of photoelectrons emitted at the surface (Is) is determined by the Beer-Lambert Law: Is = Ioe-d/ where Iois the intensity of the photoelectrons emitted at depth d below the surface and is the inelastic mean free path of the electron in the material.
In XPS analysis, the position of a peak on the x-axis indicates the elemental and chemical composition. This axis is traditionally displayed as Binding Energy in electron volts (eV).
Acceptable Detection Limit or ADL means the detectable concentration of a substance that is equal to the lowest appropriate Practical Quantitation Limit (PQL) as defined in this Section.
