Reset the Identity Value Using the DBCC CHECKIDENT Method : Here, to reset the Identity column in SQL Server you can use DBCC CHECKIDENT method. Syntax : DBCC CHECKIDENT (tablename, RESEED, newvalue); Note : If we reset the existing records in the table and insert new records, then it will show an error.
The MS SQL Server uses the IDENTITY keyword to perform an auto-increment feature. In the example above, the starting value for IDENTITY is 1, and it will increment by 1 for each new record. Tip: To specify that the Personid column should start at value 10 and increment by 5, change it to IDENTITY(10,5) .
The SQL Server uses the IDENTITY keyword to set auto increment with the following syntax while creating a table: IDENTITY (initialvalue, incrementvalue); In the above syntax: initialvalue: It is the value from where you want the numbering to begin.
If the table is empty, simply use ALTER TABLE to reset the auto increment value. ALTER TABLE yourtablename AUTOINCREMENT = 1; This sets the next auto increment value to 1 (or any number you choose).
You may need to use the DBCC CHECKIDENT(tableName, RESEED, NEWRESEEDVALUE) to update the Identity column value for new records . This will change the current seed value of the identity column of the specified table.
To change the original seed value and reseed any existing rows, drop the identity column and recreate it specifying the new seed value.
