Content created using DITA is in XML format, making it machine-readable. DITA content is componentized, arranged in topics and maps, and most commonly stored in a component content management system (CCMS).
DITA stands for Darwin Information Type Architecture, and is a generic and adaptable XML-based open standard to manage, create, and publish content. Defined and maintained by the OASIS DITA Technical Committee, DITA uses topics, maps, and output formats to generate documents.
To cover separate content such as concepts, tasks, reference, the DITA standard specifies different information types. Each information type defines structured elements that aid in authoring the relevant content. For example, the task type defines elements such as , , , and .
A element is used as a placeholder for migrated elements that cannot be appropriately tagged without manual intervention. As the element name implies, the intent for authors is to clean up the contained material and eventually remove the element.
The required-cleanup block element is used during the migration of legacy (pre-DITA) content to DITA, to allow what would otherwise be invalid mark-up to be preserved during conversion.
Create a reusable topic Navigate to the Repository. Click the contextual menu next to the reuse folder. Choose Create Dita Topic. Populate the fields in the Create New Topic dialog. For example: Click Create. Add content to the topic as required.
The DITA Style Guide provides comprehensive, practical explanations of DITA elements and attributes. Real-world examples and clear recommendations show you how to create consistent, semantically-correct DITA content. A style guide provides advice on the optimal use of approaches, procedures and processes.
