Powdered formulas are mixed 2 ounces (60 mL) of water per each level scoop of powder. Never add extra water because dilute formula can cause a seizure. Powdered formula costs the least. Ready-to-feed formula costs the most.
You can use pre-made formula for up to 24 hours. Open containers of ready-made formula, concentrated formula, and formula prepared from concentrate can be stored safely in the refrigerator for up to 48 hours. Do not store unmixed powder in the refrigerator.
Prepared infant formula can spoil if it is left out at room temperature. Use prepared infant formula within 2 hours of preparation and within one hour from when feeding begins. If you do not start to use the prepared infant formula within 2 hours, immediately store the bottle in the fridge and use it within 24 hours.
Water intoxication occurs when a baby has too much water, which leads to abnormal electrolyte levels- mainly salt. Symptoms of water intoxication include fussiness, sleepiness, lethargy, vomiting and even seizures in severe cases.
You can reheat formula if it has been properly stored, but you should never reheat formula that your baby has already started drinking from. The reason for this is bacteria from your babys mouth can get into the bottle and multiply, even if the bottle is stored in the fridge.
