#USCISAnswers: If you derived citizenship through your parents and have a U.S. passport, you do not need to file an N-600 for a certificate of citizenship. However, you may need a certificate of citizenship for certain benefits. To learn more, visit: .
USCIS may not automatically issue a naturalization certificate once a child becomes a U.S. citizen. Since the document may be needed later when the child applies for jobs or student loans, GCLO recommends filing an N-600 so the child can receive his or her own certificate of citizenship.
Approximately 4 to 7 Months After Filing Generally, USCIS requires applicants who file Form N-600 to appear for an in-person interview. However, USCIS may waive the N-600 interview at their discretion.
The average N-600 processing time is six months to over a year, depending on your chosen USCIS Service Center. You can check your case processing time here check your receipt notice to find your form, category, and the office processing your case.
SSA may contact you if there are any questions. It may take up to 10 days after the naturalization ceremony before the USCIS systems are able to be updated and transmit to SSA. If you did not provide consent with your naturalization application, you will need to contact SSA to update your records.
Section 320 of the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA 320) provides that children acquire U.S. citizenship if they satisfy certain requirements before age 18 which include: Have at least one U.S. citizen parent by birth or naturalization. Be admitted to the United States as an immigrant for lawful permanent residence.
Secondary evidence may include baptismal records/certificates, school records, census records or affidavits (if other types of secondary evidence are not available).
While a Certificate of Naturalization serves as proof of U.S. citizenship, it is not a travel document and cannot be used in place of a passport. To travel internationally, a U.S. citizen must have a valid U.S. passport.
