The headstone epitaph or gravestone quote often includes a persons name and dates together with a headstone inscription. This may take the form of a piece of prose or a reference from the Bible.
An inscription on a tomb is an epitaph, as is, by extension, anything written as if to be inscribed on a tomb. Probably the earliest surviving epitaphs are those written on ancient Egyptian sarcophagi and coffins. In Elizabethan times, epitaphs became much more common in English.
An epitaph is an inscription on a gravestone.
In addition to the name, dates of birth and death, and family relationships, epitaphs often feature a quote or statement commemorating the persons life. Many of these quotes and statements are reverent or religious, while others are humorous or philosophical. They can also be as simple as R.I.P. for Rest in Peace.
An epitaph is a phrase or words written in memory of a person who has died, especially as an inscription on a marker or monument. They serve a variety of purposes. They can tell us a bit about the deceased, such as their military service or proclaimed faith.
A memorial or headstone inscription can say anything you want it to. At a minimum, they usually include the persons full name, their date of birth and their date of death. However, many headstone inscriptions also include additional words or phrases, known as an epitaph.
Short epitaphs, with their concise and heartfelt words, serve as lasting tributes on memorial headstones. These brief yet impactful phrases, like Beloved, Forever in our hearts, and Loving you always, are often etched in loving memory at the cemetery.
These epitaphs serve as a way to honour and remember your loved ones, encapsulating their essence in a few poignant words that convey a lasting message to visitors. Whether you seek comfort, inspiration, or a way to cherish memories, selecting the right epitaph can be a meaningful tribute to those whove passed.
