The man known to history as Howard Carter was born on the 9th of May 1874 in the district of Kensington in west London. He came from a family of small landholders in the county of Norfolk and his parents were both from the market town of Swaffham, located on the road from the port of Kings Lynn to the county town of Norwich. Howards father Samuel John Carter was born in 1835 and became an artist who specialised in painting animals. His paintings were occasionally exhibited at the Royal Academy, and beginning from the late 1860s he worked as the animal illustrator for the Illustrated London News for over twenty years, dividing his time between London and Swaffham. Howard Carters mother Martha Joyce Sands married Samuel John Carter in 1858. She was the daughter of a local builder and would give birth to ten sons and one daughter.
