Empty or delete the contents of a large file using the truncate command in the Linux/Unix system. The truncate command is used to shrink or extend the size of a file to a specified size in the Linux system. It is also used to empty large file contents by using the -s option followed by 0 (zero) specified size.
Use the touch command to create a blank file The Linux touch command is used to create a file without any content. The file created using the touch command is empty with zero bytes. This command can be used when the user doesnt have data to store at the time of file creation.
There are four methods to clear the contents of a file from the command line. We can use the cat command with the cat /dev/null/ pathtofile syntax to remove the content inside the file. Similarly, we can use the echo command with the echo pathtofile syntax to remove the files content.
To delete multiple files at once, simply list all of the file names after the rm command. File names should be separated by a space. With the command rm followed by multiple file names, you can delete multiple files at once.
To delete everything in a directory run: rm /path/to/dir/* To remove all sub-directories and files: rm -r /path/to/dir/*
For a file: Right-click the file and select Delete or use the del command in Command Prompt. For a folder: Right-click the folder and select Delete or use the rmdir command in Command Prompt.
To empty a file on Linux using the truncate command: Open the terminal on your Linux PC. In the terminal, type: truncate -s 0 /home/document/path and press Enter. If the file is protected, use sudo instead to overwrite it (e.g., sudo truncate -s), but take extreme care doing this.
Delete the directory and its contents: To delete the directory and all its contents, use the rm command with the -r option, which stands for recursive. Type rm -r mydirectory and press Enter. You will be prompted to confirm the deletion.
