The most popular and effective method of cutting polystyrene is its mechanical cutting with a hand saw. In fact, hand saws are often used for either plastic or wood. They cut using both the push and pull stroke. A hand saw is the best option because it provides a good grip and control.
Hot wire foam cutting can be used on a variety of foam materials, such as Expanded Polystyrene (EPS), Extruded Polystyrene (XPS), and other foam varieties.
All XPS foam is susceptible to melting from the solvents in spray paint. There are variables that affect how vulnerable foam is to melting (spray paint brand, foam brand, distance sprayed from, amount sprayed).
Various tools, such as hand saws, hot wire cutters, long blade utility knives, and jigsaws, can be used for cutting polystyrene insulation. When cutting polystyrene with a hot knife, it is important to take safety precautions. The hot wire cutter is the quickest and neatest method for cutting polystyrene.
If you are looking for a poor solvent to collapse the foam, acetone works well.
Generally, the melting point of XPS foam is between 75℃ and 100℃. XPS foam has a closed-cell structure, which means that its melting point, like EPS, is also affected by internal gas.
Carving it with a knife is one alternative, but a far quicker and simpler trick is to get out a little acetone and pour it into the foam core. Heck, the entertainment value of this technique is worth it, all by itself.
XPS softens at 165F and melts between 200F to 210F which can potentially spread flammable material.
