An abnormal Pap test result rarely means cancer is present, especially in someone who has regular, annual Pap tests. An abnormal result means there are cells in the cervix that look unusual, which can be caused by yeast or bacterial infection, irritation, benign growths, hormonal changes, or pre-cancer.
Mild changes often go away on their own. But if mild changes are caused by a treatable vaginal infection or atrophic vaginitis, you may be treated with medicine. Moderate or severe cell changes. For moderate or severe cell changes you may have treatment that focuses on destroying or removing abnormal tissue.
Typically, your doctor will use the Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP), or perform a cold knife cone biopsy as a minor surgical procedure. Be sure to always bring up any questions you may about you Pap test with your gynecologist.
Before a Pap smear, also called a Pap test, you may be asked to: Avoid intercourse, douching, or using any vaginal medicines or spermicidal foams, creams or jellies for two days before having a Pap test. These may wash away or hide concerning cells.
LSIL changes seen on a Pap test are generally CIN 1. HSIL changes seen on a Pap test can be CIN 2, CIN2/3, or CIN 3. CIN 1 changes are mild, or low grade. They usually go away on their own and do not require treatment.
LLETZ involves using a heated wire loop to remove the abnormal cells, and in the majority of cases is carried out using a local anaesthetic. The procedure lasts a few minutes and can be carried out during a colposcopy. Removing abnormal cervical cells is usually successful (about a 90% success rate).
Abnormal Pap smear consists of premalignant or malignant cervical lesions. Many of premalignant cervical lesions will never progress to invasive malignancy, or even may regress over the time.
