An arrow pointing up means that column is sorted in ascending order. An arrow pointing down means that column is sorted in descending order.
If something is ascending, its rising or moving up. At a hot air balloon race, youll see dozens of ascending balloons. An ascending road appears to rise in front of you as it curves up over a hill, and an ascending bird flies up into the sky.
Descending Order Meaning If the information is sorted from highest to lowest, it is said to be in descending order. For example 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 are arranged in descending order. In other words, if the numbers are arranged from the largest to the smallest number, it is said to be in descending order.

Ascending should be upwards. Same as you do with numbers. 1 through infinity. An up arrow (upward triangle) is literally smallest at the top, and largest at the bottom!
