A ZIP+4 Code is a 4-digit code appended to a standard 5-digit ZIP that helps the USPS sort, route, and deliver mail more efficiently. The last 4 digits of these 9-digit ZIP Codes usually represent 6-20 delivery points on a USPS carrier route.
The correct format for a numeric ZIP+4 code is five digits, a hyphen, and four digits. The first five digits represent the 5-digit ZIP Code; the sixth and seventh digits (the first two after the hyphen) identify an area known as a sector; the eighth and ninth digits identify a smaller area known as a segment.
The five-digit code which initially specified an area or a part of a town was no longer accurate or efficient enough. So, USPS created 9-digit ZIP Codes to ensure fast and accurate mailings. They indicate the actual path the mail should travel and usually they narrow down to somewhere between ten to twenty homes.
The zip code is written at the end of the address, typically after the City and State. A zip code is always 5 digits. Zip+4 adds four digits to the five digits, and is not needed for a complete address.
Write POSTAL CODES in uppercase letters and separate the first 3 characters from the last 3 characters with 1 space. (No hyphens please. These can cause delays)

Right click select format cells choose special and then select zip code click OK and tada. Weve got our leading 0 back.
Export the query to Excel and remove the +4: In Excel, highlight the column with the ZIP codes. Select Data, Text to Columns from the menu bar. In Step 1 of 3, ensure Delimited is selected and click Next. In Step 2 of 3, unmark Tab and select Other. In Step 3 of 3, make no changes and click Finish.
The five digits actually have specific functions: the first number in the code represents a general geographic area of the nation, 0 in the East, moving to 9 in the West. The next two numbers represent regional areas, and the final two identify specific Post Offices.
