First, its worth noting that you should never use a power washer to clean a headstone. This would do irreparable damage. Instead, use a pump sprayer set on a mist setting. Gently wet the stone with clean water and watch as it dries.
Recommended biocidal cleaners include D/2 Biological Solution (which was tested in this study) manufactured by Sunshine Makers, Enviro Klean BioWash, or other cleaners that contain quaternary ammonium compounds.
Make sure to use a natural sponge or sea sponge, as products made with dyes can transfer their color onto the stone. You should also bring scraping tools made of plastic or wood to remove debris that the sponge may not be able to, and avoid using metal, as it can damage the headstone further.
Only use soft brushes and gentle cleaners, such as water or a non-ionic cleaner (neutral pH of 7). Never use wire brushes, power washers, or harsh cleaners, such as bleach.
A gentle cleaner like DAWN dishsoap along with lots of water will safely clean any type of headstone.
When you use bleach on a headstone, the porous material will absorb it. This allows bleach to work its way beneath the stones surface and damage the material both inside and out. It can stain the stone and, if used often enough, it can eventually lead to the headstone cracking and falling apart.
Never Use Bleach! Bleach can cause invisible, irreparable damage by eating away the surface of the stone. Exposed to the elements, bleach can cause the stone to decay at a more rapid rate. Using bleach can also leave a residue that no amount of cleaning and rinsing can remove.
To tackle the issue, start by cleaning the surface of the headstone with a soft bristled brush and warm water. For more stubborn stains, use a headstone cleaning spray (available from any of our shops) and allow it to soak for a few minutes before washing it off.
