The CLEAN function in Excel strips non-printable characters from an input string. It is categorized as a string/text function. Whether printable or non-printable, each character has a unique number known as its Unicode character code or value.
The CLEAN function removes all non-printable characters from the text, and the TRIM function removes all spaces from text except for single spaces between words.
TRIM Function Using the TRIM function can eliminate these excessive blank spaces. Select the data cells with excessive blank spaces and tab spaces. Now, select a new cell adjacent to the first cell. Apply the TRIM() function and drag the cell as shown below.
Removes all nonprintable characters from text. Use CLEAN on text imported from other applications that contains characters that may not print with your operating system.
Use Sheets Smart Cleanup to prepare your data for analysis At the top, click Data Data cleanup. Cleanup suggestions. If you import data into a sheet and suggestions are detected, a Data cleanup notification will appear on the bottom right click See all.
The CLEAN function will give the value with all non-printable characters removed. The function was introduced in Excel 2000 and is available in all versions after that. Remember, in the Unicode character set, there are additional non-printing characters.
