How to edit CGI files?

Always open and edit CGI scripts in a basic text editor (Notepad, for example). CGI scripts are really no different than normal text files that usually end with either . cgi or . pl They are written in ASCII format, and can be opened and viewed using any text editor.

Is cgi-bin safe?

cgi script, which provides an HTML-embedded programming language embedded in HTML pages, database access, and other nice features, should never be installed in the scripts (cgi-bin) directory. This allows anyone on the Internet to run shell commands on the Web server host machine.

Do I need the cgi-bin folder?

Is it OK to delete bin files?

If it is outside of C:\Windows, then it is safe to delete. It might belong to a program which obviously wont work after you delete the bin file, but you wont cause irrepairable problems on OS level. If it IS in C:\Windows, you should leave it there.

What does cgi-bin do?

A cgi-bin is a special directory designated in the configuration files of a web server to allow execution of CGI scripts in specified directories. Many new servers have done away with this and allow users execute any scripts ending in . cgi. The cgi-bin/ remains as a default folder on all new accounts.

Should I delete a cgi-bin?

Since its possible to run CGI scripts outside the CGI-Bin, it isnt necessarily bad if something happens to the CGI-Bin folder. You can delete the folder if you arent using the CGI-Bin folder to store your scripts. Although, they dont use a lot of storage space on your server, so its fine to leave them there.
