Commas (Eight Basic Uses) Use a comma to separate independent clauses. Use a comma after an introductory clause or phrase. Use a comma between all items in a series. Use commas to set off nonrestrictive clauses. Use a comma to set off appositives. Use a comma to indicate direct address. Use commas to set off direct quotations.
Contrary to what most students believe, the Oxford comma isnt grammatically correct. But that doesnt mean its wrong to use it. Instead, its grammatically optional. As mentioned in the section above, whether or not you use the Oxford comma will depend on the style guide you follow.
Except after an introductory dependent clause, do not use a comma to separate a dependent clause from a main clause unless the dependent clause provides nonessential information. See also Restrictive and Nonrestrictive Modifiers.
But, if we use too many, of them, our writing becomes difficult, for people, to read, and our ideas end up fragmented, instead of connected. For years participants in my grammar and writing workshops have magnanimously imparted their golden rule for commas: use a comma whenever you would take a breath.
Theres no difference between the serial comma and the Oxford comma. Theyre two different names for the same thing: a comma before the conjunction (and or or) in a list of three or more items (e.g., ham, cheese, and tomato).
In other words, its not incorrect to use the Oxford comma or not to use it, but it is advisable to be consistent one way or the other. AP stylebased on The Associated Press Stylebook, the style guide that American news organizations generally adhere todoes not use the Oxford comma.
Use a comma to separate words that interrupt the flow of a sentence or modify a noun. Example: Casey, my dog, ate the dinner right off my plate! Example: Without hesitation, my mother scolded Casey for eating my dinner. Use a comma when introducing quotations.
Revised on March 29, 2023. The serial comma (aka Oxford comma or Harvard comma) is a term that describes the use of a comma before the conjunction in a list of three or more items (e.g., the comma before and in pancakes, scrambled eggs, and bacon). The name comes from the fact that its used in a series (list).
