ASCII uses binary to represent the different characters. Each character is represented by 8 bits (1 byte) of binary code where each bit represents either a 0 or 1 depending on its position within the byte sequence.
The text files can easily be transferred from one computer system to another. Binary files cannot easily be transferred from one computer system to another due to variations in the internal variations in the internal representation which varies from computer to computer.
A binary file is a file whose content is in a binary format consisting of a series of sequential bytes, each of which is eight bits in length. The content must be interpreted by a program or a hardware processor that understands in advance exactly how that content is formatted and how to read the data.
To manually convert an ASCII character to binary: Determine the characters ASCII decimal value. Convert the decimal value to binary by dividing it by two and noting the remainders until you get to zero.
ASCII is a 7 bit encoding. Of the 128 available code points, which also make up the first 128 characters in Unicode, 33 (031 and 127) are control character codes, and the remainder make up the basic printable character set, including breaking spaces.
Files sent in binary mode are sent from one system to another with no modification. The file size will always be unchanged on a binary transfer. ASCII mode is appropriate when using FTP to send a single text file between two PCs.
Binary files are generally smaller and better for 3d printing than ASCII files. ASCII - Uses ASCII encoding for the STL files. ASCII files are generally larger than binary files, but easier to manually inspect and debug.
