What Is a Community Cleanup? A community cleanup brings volunteers together to clean, repair, and improve public spaces or other areas (such as vacant lots or abandoned properties) that have been neglected, vandalized, or misused.
Why are Clean Up Campaigns important? First, they help to reduce pollution and waste in our environment. By cleaning up litter and other types of waste, we can prevent them from entering our waterways, harming wildlife, and polluting our air.
Volunteers should wear closed-toe shoes such as sturdy work boots (no flip-flops or bare feet) at all times, and wear clothing and sun-block to protect from the sun. Dont touch or pick up dead animals, or attempt to move injured animals.
Clean-up drives are an effective way to clear waste from natural habitats. Moreover, the visual impact of seeing others cleaning up a particular place littered with waste can have a domino effect and compel people to reflect on their actions.
7 Steps to Hosting a Successful Cleanup Organize a planning group. Choose an ideal date, site, and time. Gather volunteers. Line up cleanup supplies and arrange for waste disposal. Start your cleanup. Dispose of waste. Pat each other on the back for a job well done!
Supplies for community cleanup: Trash bags. Shovels. Rakes. Gloves. Paint and paintbrushes. Wheelbarrows. Gardening materials, like plants and mulch.
Depending on your location, youll need supplies such as trash bags, a first aid kit, hand sanitizer, wipes, and large coolers of water. You should also provide (or ask volunteers to bring) items such as reusable work/garden gloves, reusable water bottles, sunscreen, and bug spray.
