Answer and Explanation: By having his characters story begin and end at the pond, Steinbeck is showing his readers that all their efforts to improve their lot in life were futile. They work hard in order to better themselves, and despite all their toil and plans, they end up exactly where they began.
In chapter 3 of Of Mice and Men, George makes Lennie return a puppy he was hiding in his coat. Candy reluctantly allows Carlson to kill his dog because the dog smells. George, Lennie, and Candy discuss buying a farm together. Curley and Slim are angry with each other because Curley thinks Slim has been with his wife.
The clearing in Of Mice and Men refers to the clearing in the brush along the Salinas River. It is next to a pool of water that remains, even when the river is low. This is where George and Lennie camp on their first night of the story and the place where Lennie goes to hide after he kills Curleys wife.
In this lesson, we mentioned three symbols from John Steinbecks Of Mice and Men: Candys dog, which represents the fate of those who are weak; mice, which symbolize false hope; and the dream farm, which symbolizes unattainable independence and protection from the world.
Like the farm they dream of, this acts as a safe haven for the two of them. Steinbecks major importance on the riverbank also foreshadows more events to come. George repeatedly tells Lennie that if he ever gets in trouble while at the ranch to come back to the riverbank and wait for George to come back for him.
Answer and Explanation: George comes to Lennie and shoots him in the back of the head. Before he shoots him, however, he has Lennie look across the river and imagine the farm they talked about getting. George recites the dream for Lennie before he takes the shot.
Steinbecks description of a safe and peaceful clearing along the river represents hope that the fantasies of the protagonists will someday be realized. At the end of the novel, when a heron eats a snake by the Salinas riverbed, the scene symbolizes Georges killing of Lennie and the death of their dream.
In chapter 6, Lennie has killed Curleys wife and run away. The other men intend to torture him before they kill him, so George takes Curleys gun and heads off to find him. Fortunately, he finds Lennie before the rest of the men and has a few moments with him to bring him joy before he kills him out of mercy.
