Do NOT clean the base of your vanes. This will remove any activator the manufacturer put on and will weaken your glue bond. Only clean your arrow shaft. You can use either denatured alcohol or acetone to clean your arrow shafts and ensure a good fletching bond.
Use Isopropyl alcohol as a cleaning agent. Dont use acetone or other solvents, especially if the arrow is already fitted with a nock. The fumes can weaken the nock and cause a dry-fire.
Cleaning the outside of the arrow shaft Rinse under HOT running water and let air dry, standing the shafts upright until dry. For unfinished wooden shafts: Sand the surface of the shaft smooth with a fine-grit sandpaper (minimum 220 grit). Use a tack cloth to remove sawdust.
It is very important to clean the inside of the shaft using a cotton swab dipped in denatured alcohol. Continue cleaning, using new cotton swabs, until no traces of black residue remain.
First, hold down the Alt key. For a left-facing arrow, type the number 27. A right arrow can be inserted by typing the number 26. Type the number 24 for an up arrow, or 25 for a down arrow.
I scrape mine with a knife and pour some acetone on a wool pad to remove the remaining glue. After the wool pad I use an old sock or rag with acetone for the final wipe down. Thanks for the advice guys! FYI the Bohning stripper tool is good for removing the old vane but it doesnt do much on the glue.
Polyurethane will provide a very hard, durable finish. You can apply it by dipping just as you would with the lacquers. It does take longer to dry between coats than most of the lacquers. Do not mix lacquer and polyurethane.
