the effect of cleaning is critical surfaces and instruments cannot be effectively disinfected or sterilized if they are not properly cleaned first soil protects pathogens from the action of disinfection and sterilization allowing them to survive microorganisms that survived reprocessing have the potential to cause infection plus guidelines are all emphasizing the importance of cleaning in any infection control program the trouble is even when you follow protocols and use the proper cleaning techniques you cant actually see whether any microscopic contaminants have been left behind thats where cleaning monitoring comes in the 3m clean trace ATP monitoring system is a reliable and complete cleaning monitoring system it works by measuring adenosine triphosphate or ATP ATP is a molecule thats found in all living cells and is present in all organic matter the cleantrace system uses an enzyme that converts ATP to light invisible to the naked eye but easily read by the clean trace luminom

So, simply put, Luminometry is the process of measuring light. Luminometers are the instruments that do the measuring. They can be fundamentally defined as machines that detect very low light levels. However, the way they work can be a bit difficult to visualize.
Luminescence-based assays are assays in which a luminescent signal (in the form of light, or photons) is generated via a chemical or biochemical reaction and measured using a plate reader.

Luminescence is the basic principle behind the working of luminometers. This phenomenon is usually ascribed to oxidative reactions which take place in solution producing molecules in an excited state. Some of these reactions release energy in the form of heat while others release in the form of photons.
The luminometer evaluates surface cleanliness by measuring the chemical marker adenosine triphosphate (ATP), a compound found in all types of plant, animal and microbial cells. The science behind the luminometer is based on the enzyme luciferase the same enzyme that makes firefly tails glow at night.
Photons, packets of light, emitted from bioluminescent and chemiluminescent reactions are typically measured using a luminometer. Luminometers are simple, relatively inexpensive instruments designed to measure sample light output.
ATP testing is conducted using a Luminometer, a device that measures ATP, and a testing swab. Once an area is cleaned, a swab of a surface is taken. Then, the swab is placed in the Luminometer to measure the ATP level. The reading on the device is measured in Relative Light Units (RLU).
It can also be defined as the luminous intensity per unit emitting area. The SI units of the luminance are the candela per square meter (cd/m2 = lm sr1 m2). A high luminance of a light source is achieved if it produces a high luminous flux from a small emitting area and emits into a small solid angle.
Lumens (lm) are the unit of measurement we use to quantify the amount of visible light the human eye can see. The luminous flux of a particular light source is measured in lumens.
Hold the swab between the thumb and forefinger in such a way that the swab can be rotated. Apply downward pressure. Do not touch the swab near the swab bud. Rotate swab during sampling.
