Hazard Class 6 consists of two divisions: Division 6.1 includes toxic substances, poisons, and irritating material. Examples of Division 6.1 materials (not all of which are mailable) include bromobenzyl cyanide, methyl bromide, motor fuel anti-knock mixtures, and tear gas. Division 6.2 includes infectious substances.
Column 8 identifies packaging references. § 172.102. Column 6 lists the primary and subsidiary hazard label codes specified for the material. Column 5 lists the packing group assignment.
Precedence of Hazard Table. Use the Precedence of Hazard Table in 49 CFR 173.2(a) to determine the primary hazard class of materials. The headings at the top and along the left represent the hazard classes and divisions into which a material may fall.

The Hazardous Materials Table [§172.101, Col. 6] identifies the proper label(s) for the hazardous material listed.
The Basic Description of a hazardous material includes the Identification Number, the Proper Shipping Name, Hazard Class, and Packing Group (when applicable).
The Hazardous Materials Table comprises eight columns that list the material's name, danger class, identification number, and other information along with the route of transportation (air, ground, water, etc.). Consult the official CDL manual in your state for more details.
The DOT separates hazardous materials into nine different categories or “hazard classes.” They are defined by specific hazardous properties and have distinct regulatory requirements for packaging, markings, and labels. Keep reading for a general summary of those properties.
