my name is madison brockman and im currently in the second year of an andrew w mellon fellowship in paper conservation this is a japanese print which is made with several colors of ink this object has quite a bit of discoloration almost like little freckle-like spots called foxing this is um quite a common occurrence with paper collections and sometimes can be very difficult to remove so thats what im gonna try and treat today after examination i can begin treatment and this usually starts with some light surface cleaning to get rid of any dust or debris thats settled on the surface of the print over time im treating this specific object by bathing it on the gel and gum slab rather than using a full immersion bath because the object is a little bit fragile this will be a good way of effectively cleaning especially that really tricky foxing staining while making sure that the object is physically safe to treat the foxing in this print im not just using plain water instead im usin

As a Stain Remover ing to baking soda manufacturer Arm Hammer, baking soda and water are a potent duo for stain removal. Make a paste with six tablespoons of baking soda and 1/3 cup of warm water, rub it into the stain and let it do its thing. The baking soda will lift the stain out of the fibers.
In this chapter, we discuss eight physical stain-removal techniques: brushing, flushing, freezing, presoaking, pretreating, scraping, sponging, and tamping. Which technique to use in treating a particular spot or stain depends upon both the nature of the stain and the type of surface stained.
Grease stains- apply baking soda onto stain and leave for 30 mins to 1 hour. Sweat stains- rub paste on stained area and let sit for a few mins. Blood stains- rub paste on stained area and let sit for a 1 hour. Vomit stains- apply baking soda directly onto stain and leave for 1 hour.
Sponge or soak stain in cool water. Pretreat with prewash stain remover, liquid laundry detergent, liquid detergent booster or paste of powder laundry product and water. Launder using sodium hypochlorite bleach, if safe for fabric, or oxygen bleach.
Bonus tip: Break down stains with baking soda Its been trusted for more than 170 years to help break down most stains and get clothes fresh and clean. To make a pre-treating paste, combine 6 tablespoons of ARM HAMMER Baking Soda with ⅓ cup warm water.
Baking soda is a natural stain remover that can be used on most types of fabric. Mix baking soda with water to form a thick paste then apply the paste to the stain. After it dries, wash it off with water.
If you use it quickly and rinse it off, you might be fine, but allowing a baking soda mixture to sit on the surface for too long can cause it to oxidize, which means that the surface changes color.
