You may also be selected randomly for secondary screening at any point during the security process but most commonly when you walk through the body scanner or metal detector.
Anecdotally, it seems that SSSS is given to passengers with more unusual travel patterns, such as one-way international tickets or travel to destinations deemed high-risk by the U.S. Its also very likely that the TSA doles out the SSSS designation randomly, too.
Why did I get SSSS on my boarding pass? Is it actually random? Yes and no. ing to TSA spokesman Michael McCarthy, SSSS appears on a passengers boarding pass when the passenger has been selected by the agencys Secure Flight system for enhanced security screening.
A Secondary Security Screening Selection or SSSS designation on your boarding pass means that youve been picked for a secondary security screening. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) may select passengers for SSSS on flights from, to and within the U.S.
Why do travelers get SSSS? TSA doesnt publish specific guidelines on why certain passengers get SSSS markings on their boarding passes. Anecdotally, passengers with unusual travel patterns, one-way international flights and travelers to certain countries get it the most.
If a traveler receives the SSSS designation, they can appeal their status to the Department of Homeland Security. Those who believe they have been placed on the SSSS list erroneously can send their complaints to the DHS Traveler Redress Inquiry Program (DHS TRIP).
And no, if youve been randomly chosen, SSSS on your boarding pass isnt permanent. Chances are it wont be on your next booking and theres a chance you will never be selected for additional screening ever again. In many cases its just luck of the draw.
Selection criteria Passengers who pay cash for their tickets. Passengers who fly through a country that is considered high risk by the Department of State. Passengers who frequently travel to unusual destinations. Passengers whose name resembles someone on a Department of Homeland Security watch list.
