The Great Seal of the United States is the symbol of our sovereignty as a nation. Its obverse is used on official documents to authenticate the signature of the President and it appears on proclamations, warrants, treaties, and commissions of high officials of the government.
Federal Reserve Notes were issued with a green seal, silver certificates with a blue seal, gold certificates with an orange seal, United States Notes with a red seal, and National Bank Notes and Federal Reserve Bank Notes with brown seals.
The shield consists of red and white stripes with a blue bar above that represents Congress. The colors are taken from the American flag and officially the red represents hardiness and valor, the white represents purity and innocence, and the blue, vigilance, perseverance, and justice.
The red seal indicates the redemption of the note. The Red Seal is a United States Note as opposed to green seals which indicate they are Federal Reserve Notes, redeemable by the Federal Reserve, basically exchangeable for another federal reserve note.
A green seal to the right of the portrait represents the U.S. Department of the Treasury. The design of the seal was changed to incorporate an English inscription and appears on all Federal Reserve notes of the 1969 series year or later.
You can wash it with soap and water and put it to dry without letting the paper money soak in the soap for too long. Do a fast hand wash and put it to dry. I do it with very dirty paper currency and it becomes fairly clean.
A serial number 1 for a 1976 $2 bill would be worth $20,000 or more. But [for] a majority of those people holding 1976 $2 bills, they are only worth face value. There are very few that actually exceed face value.
A watermark is a faint image or pattern that becomes visible when you hold the bill up to the light. The watermark should match the portrait on the bill. Look for security threads: Most genuine banknotes have a thin, embedded security thread that runs vertically through the bill.
