Normal and Critical Findings Maternal AFP levels in pregnancy start to rise from about the 14th week of gestation up until about 32 weeks of gestation. Between 15 and 20 weeks, AFP levels usually range between 10 ng/ml to 150 ng/ml.
Here is the normal range: For adults: less than 40 ng/mL. At 15 to 21 weeks' gestation: 10 to 150 ng/mL.
MS-AFP and AF-AFP were given as multiples of the median (MoM). Values < or = 1-2.0 MoM were considered normal. Elevated levels were defined to be greater than 2 MoM. In all cases the chromosomal finding was normal or norm variant.
An AFP level between 0 ng/mL to 40 ng/mL is normal for adults. An extremely high level of AFP in your blood—greater than 400 ng/mL—could be a sign of liver tumors. High levels of AFP may mean other cancers, including Hodgkin disease, lymphoma, and renal cell carcinoma (kidney cancer).
The AFP concentration in maternal serum rises throughout pregnancy, from the nonpregnancy level of 0.2 ng/mL to about 250 ng/mL at 32 weeks gestation.
AFP is measured in nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL). An AFP level between 0 ng/mL to 40 ng/mL is normal for adults. An extremely high level of AFP in your blood—greater than 400 ng/mL—could be a sign of liver tumors.
A positive test with a high AFP suggests a birth defect like spina bifida. That's typically a result of 2.5 times or more than the "average" level of AFP you'd expect to see at that point in your pregnancy. A positive test with low AFP could mean a problem like Down syndrome or Edwards syndrome.
The AFP concentration in maternal serum rises throughout pregnancy, from the nonpregnancy level of 0.2 ng/mL to about 250 ng/mL at 32 weeks gestation.
AFP levels normally rise and fall at set times during pregnancy, so an abnormal AFP may mean that your baby is due earlier or later than estimated. This is the most common reason for abnormal AFP levels. You're pregnant with more than one baby.
Here is the normal range: For adults: less than 40 ng/mL. At 15 to 21 weeks' gestation: 10 to 150 ng/mL.
