The primary requirement addressed by these standards is that an employer must ensure prompt first aid treatment for injured employees, either by providing for the availability of a trained first aid provider at the worksite, or by ensuring that emergency treatment services are within reasonable proximity of the
First aid can include cleaning minor cuts, scrapes, or scratches; treating a minor burn; applying bandages and dressings; the use of non-prescription medicine; draining blisters; removing debris from the eyes; massage; and drinking fluids to relieve heat stress.
Note to 1904.7: OSHA believes that most docHub injuries and illnesses will result in one of the criteria listed in 1904.7(a): death, days away from work, restricted work or job transfer, medical treatment beyond first aid, or loss of consciousness.
Maintaining records of all work-related injuries and illnesses can illuminate ongoing issues within the safety structure of a corporation or industry. Locating these weak points can prevent more extensive injuries in the future. Accurate records allow for more informed decision making.
Recordkeeping Requirements Many employers with more than 10 employees are required to keep a record of serious work-related injuries and illnesses. (Certain low-risk industries are exempted.) Minor injuries requiring first aid only do not need to be recorded.
While the use of casts, splints or orthopedic devices designed to immobilize a body part is considered medical treatment for OSHA recordkeeping purposes, wraps or non-constraining devices such as wristlets or elastic bandages are generally considered first aid treatment (See Recordkeeping Guidelines, Page 43).
You must consider an injury or illness to meet the general recording criteria, and therefore to be recordable, if it results in any of the following: death, days away from work, restricted work or transfer to another job, medical treatment beyond first aid, or loss of consciousness.
X-rays for diagnostic purposes are considered first aid and not recordable. Physical therapy and chiropractic treatment are recordable but hot and cold therapies and massages are not. Immobilizing devices with rigid stays are recordable but elastic bandages, wraps and non-rigid back belts are not recordable.
