In an ultra-high vacuum, there is a negligible amount of gas molecules, and this ensures that the photoelectrons that docHub the electron detector have not collided with (and lost energy to) gas molecules in the chamber.
UHV conditions are utilized for two reasons. First, the electrons must docHub the detector and their mean-free path is short at high pressures. Second, the analyzers are designed to work under UHV conditions. Electrons have a short mean-free path under atmospheric conditions.
XPS is a non-destructive technique to measure surface chemistry of solid materials, in particular the chemical composition and electronic state.
X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), also known as electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA), is used to determine quantitative atomic composition and chemistry. It is a surface analysis technique with a sampling volume that extends from the surface to a depth of approximately 5070 .
XPS can measure elemental composition as well as the chemical and electronic state of the atoms within a material. XPS spectra are obtained by irradiating a solid surface with a beam of X-rays and measuring the kinetic energy of electrons that are emitted from the top 1-10 nm of the material.
XPS can detect all elements except hydrogen and helium, with detection limits of ca. 0.1 atomic percent. This makes it an ideal analysis for both conductive and insulating samples including ceramics, glasses, polymers, semiconductors, metals, composite materials, and strongly adsorbed liquids or gases on surfaces.
The basic principle of XPS is the photoelectric effect discovered by Hertz in 1887 [7, 8] and extended to surface analysis by K. Siegbahn and his research group at Uppsala University, Sweden, during the mid-1960s. Siegbahn won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1981 for his work in XPS and coined the acronym ESCA [9].
Because XPS is a surface technique, there is a limited amount of organic information XPS can provide. XPS is limited to measurements of elements having atomic numbers of 3 or greater, making it unable to detect hydrogen or helium. XPS spectra also take a long time to obtain.
How to interpret the data it generates Peaks from the XPS spectra give relative number of electrons with a specific binding energy. The shorter the peak, the less electrons represented. The greater the binding energy, the greater the attraction of that electron to the nucleus.
XPS measurements are conducted under ultra-high vacuum ( 10- 8 Torr) in order to avoid collision between photoelectrons and gas molecules in the spectrometer, and minimize surface contamination from residual gases.
