The gold standard in ACL injury evaluation is diagnostic arthroscopy3,4; however, the diagnostic accuracy of clinical diagnostic tests and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is debatable. Because of the frequency of knee injury,3 MRI is a common diagnostic tool used for imaging and diagnosis.
The anterior Lachman test, anterior drawer test and the pivot shift test, which are summarised in Table 1, are the most commonly known physical tests used to assess the integrity of the ACL (Benjaminse 2006; Leblanc 2015; Malanga 2003; Scholten 2003; Solomon 2001).
The Lachman test is the most accurate of the 3 diagnostic physical procedures. The most recent meta-analysis reports a sensitivity of 68% for partial ruptures and 96% for complete ACL ruptures.
o You may shower 48 hours after your surgery and get your incisions wet. Let the water run down over the incisions but do not rub or scrub them. o Do not soak or submerge the surgical site for at least 3 weeks following surgery. o Rest and elevate your leg for the first 24 hours.
Katz and Fingeroth reported that the Lachman test has a diagnostic accuracy of acute ACL ruptures (within 2 weeks of examination) of 77.7% sensitivity and 95% specificity.
ACL LAXITY TESTS The most frequently used tests for assessing ACL laxity are the anterior drawer test, Lachman test, Maclntosh test, jerk test, flexion rotation drawer test, Slocum test, and Losee test.
An MRI can show the extent of an ACL injury and signs of damage to other tissues in the knee, including the cartilage. Ultrasound. Using sound waves to visualize internal structures, ultrasound may be used to check for injuries in the ligaments, tendons and muscles of the knee.
Nutrition and Diet Before ACL Surgery Limit or stop using things such as caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol in the weeks leading to surgery. Take certain nutritional supplements such as multivitamins, vitamin C, and zinc before surgery. These help promote wound healing during post-op recovery.
Whether you need ACL surgery as the result of a sports injury or because of another type of accident, the recovery timeline is similar for most people. A full recovery, including the return to your pre-injury condition, with full range of motion and stability in the knee joint, usually takes six months.
To ensure the surgical site is healing well, you should clean it gently with soap and water, but do not scrub or soak the incision until you are cleared to do so.
