in this video im going to share why your cv photo or resume photo is damaging your chances or if you dont have a photo why it could if you add one so i covered this briefly in my cv advice series on how to write a cv specifically in my video on mistakes that are hurting your chances but the reason that i am dedicating a video specifically to this topic is because of how often i see it particularly done badly and its so widespread that i need to expand on this topic a little bit and also doing a slightly deeper dive would help you if you are applying for lots of jobs and youre wondering if theres anything that you can tweak about your cv so first and most importantly think about what your cv itself is for i explained this quite well in the video that i mentioned earlier so ill just let myself do the talking in a quick snippet from that video but i would like you to think about whether or not you should include a photo like this the purpose of your cv is to assess your suitability

Recruiters will be used to receiving resumes/CVs with or without resume photos, depending on the occupation in question. When in doubt, to err on the safe side, we suggest not including a photo.
The right CV photos should be: Smile. Smiling in your photo can make you look more confident and approachable and looking directly at the camera makes you appear more trustworthy than if you are looking down or away. Taken in a suitable location. Make sure the background is appropriate.
How to take a good resume photo at home Have a loved one photograph you. Find your perfect pose. Use a neutral background. Find your tilt. Smile! (if you want to) Avoid the ID card effect. Dress for the job youre applying for (unless youre Batman).
Smile! Not a huge, cheesy grin, but a nice, natural smile really can go a long way. Some people can look ferociously grumpy when they arent smiling, and the last thing you want is to scare off potential employers at the first hurdle.
Dont use a selfie image Sorry but your iPhones camera isnt the right tool for the job. Taking your own photo tells employers you arent a fan of extra effort. Dont cause a distraction You dont want recruiters to focus on your looks, but your skills and experience instead.
In most cases you do not need to include a photo on your CV because they simply add no value to an application and they waste space. However, if you are in a country or industry where a photo is required, then make sure it looks professional and takes up minimal space.
The optimal size would be a 2-by-2 inch picture for the best resume format. Its big enough to show your features and make an excellent first impression, but not too much so that it would distract from the rest of the information.
On most resumes this will be around 2000 pixels, so we recommend any header/footer images that you intend to use be around 1800 to 1900 pixels wide. This will result in the minimum amount of resizing to both the image and the resume.
So steer clear of providing a picture or any other details that reveal too much personal data. If you are like many job seekers, however, youll include in your resume a link to your social media profiles or personal website, where photos are recommended.
