What is the depth sensitivity of XPS?

XPS normally probes to a depth of 10 nm. However, because XPS is an ultra-high vacuum technique, the sample to be analysed has first to be evacuated.

What is the drawback of XPS?

Because XPS is a surface technique, there is a limited amount of organic information XPS can provide. XPS is limited to measurements of elements having atomic numbers of 3 or greater, making it unable to detect hydrogen or helium. XPS spectra also take a long time to obtain.

How do I clean my Dell XPS?

Moisten a microfiber cloth with a mixture of 70% isopropyl alcohol / 30% water. The cloth should be damp, but not dripping wet. Excess moisture should be removed if the cloth is wet before wiping the product. Using any material other than a microfiber cloth could cause damage to your product.

What is an advantage of XPS over other surface techniques?

XPS can detect all elements except hydrogen and helium, with detection limits of ca. 0.1 atomic percent. This makes it an ideal analysis for both conductive and insulating samples including ceramics, glasses, polymers, semiconductors, metals, composite materials, and strongly adsorbed liquids or gases on surfaces.

Why is XPS so surface sensitive?

The peak shape and precise position indicates the chemical state for the element. XPS is a surface sensitive technique because only those electrons generated near the surface escape and are detected. The photoelectrons of interest have relatively low kinetic energy.

Why is only XPS sensitive to the top few nanometers of the sample surface?

X-rays impinge upon a sample and ionize atoms, releasing core-level photoelectrons. The escaping photoelectrons kinetic energy limits the depth from which it can emerge, giving XPS its high surface sensitivity and sampling depth of a few nanometers.

Why XPS is very surface sensitive?

What factors contribute to the intensity of an XPS peak?

The intensity depends on the X-ray emission, charge neutralization, resolution, sample itself and many other parameters. So it may happen that withn the same sample and using same setting you would get a different peak intensity if you measure them on different date/time.
