The body of the letter should provide specific examples that illustrate your strengths, abilities, and personal qualities that make you the perfect fit for law. These examples could come from exemplary academic work, extracurricular activities, or professional experiences.
The best reference is from someone who has high regard for your work, knows you well and is a good writer. Ideally, your reference should be able to evaluate your performance in the same way and in the same language as law schools admissions committee members evaluate students in their program.
College professors and instructors are the best recommenders for law school. Law schools are most interested in academic letters of recommendation and some will specifically indicate that the letters of recommendation must be academic. Even if the schools dont specify, academic letters are preferred.
Use examples and specific details to illustrate why this person is the best candidate. Choose strong, accurate adjectives over general terms or cliches. Think about what the person reading the letter might want to know. Include details or insight that wouldnt necessarily show up on a resume or application.
If you intend to reuse a letter of recommendation for an admission year other than the one for which it was written, or for a different law degree program, it is a good idea to contact the recommender as a courtesy to make sure that the person does not mind this reuse.
While letters of recommendation are just one part of your application, they do play an important role in the college admissions process. These letters provide admission representatives with valuable information thats not necessarily obvious from your college application alone.
