DCIS is a microscopic disease its not something that you can see or feel it doesnt look different from normal breast tissue so its very difficult from a surgeon standpoint to get it out all the time without help we use all the tools at our disposal mammography MRI ultrasound if appropriate to try to get clean margins we x-ray the specimen in the operating room to try to get clean margins to look to see where the calcifications stopped and where they start wheres the edge but margin probe also helps with clean margins for DCIS its not just indicated for invasive cancer margin probe is another way of doing additional sampling of the lumpectomy faces so that we can really make sure that we cover the whole specimen looking for DCIS we use it for DCIS we use it for invasive cancer and we dont differentiate between the two in terms of whos a candidate for margin probe margin probe helps us get clean margins with DCIS as well

The recommended treatment for cutaneous squamous cell cancer (CuSCC) of the head and neck is Mohs surgical excision or wide local excision. Excision is recommended to a gross surgical margin of 46 mm however this is based on limited evidence and specify a goal histologic margin.
For a low-risk non-melanoma skin cancer, the margin may be as narrow as 4 millimeters (mm). For a thick melanoma, the margin may be as wide as 2 centimeters (cm). If you had an excisional biopsy, your doctor will mark the margins from the biopsy scar.
Recent published guidelines suggest that adequate margins for DCIS should be 2 mm after breast conserving surgery followed by radiotherapy (RT). Many groups now use this guideline as an absolute indication for additional surgery.
Current NCCN Guidelines recommend excision with a 46-mm clinical margin for low-risk cSCC and wider ( 6-mm) clinical margin for high-risk cSCC tumors.
