Charles Zona (CZ): Hello, and welcome to another McCrone Group webinar. My name is Charles Zona, and today we are happy to welcome Doug Meier. Doug is going to talk to us about X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, otherwise known as XPS. Before we get started I would like to give you a bit of Dougs background. Doug is a senior research scientist with McCrone Associates. He specializes in surface sensitive spectroscopies, such as Auger electron, X-ray photoelectron, infrared reflection absorption, thermal desorption, and low-energy electron diffraction. Doug was awarded the U.S. Department of Commerces Silver Medal for his work in the development of conductometric chemical microsensor array technology for the detection of chemical warfare agents. He also has over ten years of micro beam analysis experience prior to joining McCrone Associates. Doug will field questions from the audience immediately following todays presentation, and this webinar is being recorded and will be available o

The XPS (XML Paper Specification) format, developed by Microsoft, serves as a fixed-page document format, a spool file format, and a page description language (PDL) for printers.
Styrofoam is one of the easiest materials to shape by normal means e.g. slicing with sharp knives or a hot-wire cutter, sawing with serrated blades, rasping with files, and smoothing with sandpaper.
X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), also known as electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA), is a technique for analyzing a materials surface chemistry. XPS can measure elemental composition as well as the chemical and electronic state of the atoms within a material.
The pink or blue foams (sometimes called XPS for extruded polystyrene) are usually used for making detailed structures like walls and buildings. Although they do not cut as fast as the less-dense EPS foam, they cut very well with our hot wire tools.
The basic principle of XPS is the photoelectric effect discovered by Hertz in 1887 [7, 8] and extended to surface analysis by K. Siegbahn and his research group at Uppsala University, Sweden, during the mid-1960s. Siegbahn won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1981 for his work in XPS and coined the acronym ESCA [9].
What is XPS? XPS, or Extruded Polystyrene, is a closed-cell home insulation foam board, making it far denser than Expanded Polystyrene, which is an open-cell foam and commonly known as styrofoam. Because of this, XPS carves like wood, and sands well. You can also cut it with a blade or hot wire knife.
XPS can measure elemental composition as well as the chemical and electronic state of the atoms within a material. XPS spectra are obtained by irradiating a solid surface with a beam of X-rays and measuring the kinetic energy of electrons that are emitted from the top 1-10 nm of the material.
Wax a blade to cut the foam. You could use a utility knife, old kitchen knife, bread knife, or box cutter. Take a white candle and rub it against the blade before you slice through the foam. The wax will make the blade slide smoothly in the foam. Its best to use these simple blades with soft or thin foam.
The binding energies of the numerous photoelectrons emitted from a surface sample are used as a fingerprint to identify elements present. Chemical shifts in XPS spectra are observed when an element enters a different bound state, which results in changes in the binding energy of core electrons.
