Flushing a PICC The PICC needs to be flushed once weekly with 10mls of 0.9% Sodium Chloride to maintain patency when not in use or after any infusion or bolus injection. There is no need to withdraw blood into the syringe prior to a routine flush with saline (RCN 2010).
To clean the line and exit site we use Chlorhexidine gluconate 2%. This is the only product we should be using and if patients are allergic/irritation occurs you are able to use normal saline 0.9%. Whenever accessing a Central venous device you should always use aseptic none touch technique (ANTT) .
The flushing technique is a common practice that should allow to maintain the patency of the catheter and reduce the risk of mixture of different substances by cleaning the inner lumen of the catheter [16, 17], also enabling the prevention of bacterial colonization of vascular access devices [4].
Use an alcohol swab to rub the cap of the line you want to flush. Rub for 15 to 30 seconds, and then let the cap dry. Hold the end of the line so it does not touch anything.
Use the alcohol swab to clean the injection cap of the lumen to be flushed. Rub the cap with an alcohol swab, rubbing vigorously for 15 seconds, and then allow it to dry. Hold the end of the catheter so it does not touch anything. Open the clamp on the lumen.
Povidone-iodine solution is often used for such cleaning, but chlorhexidine appears to be twice as effective as iodine. Routine replacement of lines makes no difference in preventing infection.
Youll need to flush your PICC line as often as directed by your healthcare provider. You may need to flush it after each use. If the PICC line is not in active use, you may need to flush it once a day. Or you may only need to flush it once a week.
Clean the outside threaded area of the lumen with an alcohol wipe for at least 30 seconds. Place a new cap securely into the open end. If you do not have a new cap, wrap the end of the lumen with sterile gauze until you can get a cap. Flush catheter following the usual steps.
