XPS can detect all elements except hydrogen and helium, with detection limits of ca. 0.1 atomic percent. This makes it an ideal analysis for both conductive and insulating samples including ceramics, glasses, polymers, semiconductors, metals, composite materials, and strongly adsorbed liquids or gases on surfaces.
AES has the better spatial resolution, allowing identification of small particles, because electrons can be focused to a spot size about an order of magnitude smaller than X-rays. The higher energy of incoming electrons in AES presents a larger potential for surface damage than XPS.
XRD is mainly used to determine - lattice parameter, internal stress/strain (elastic), coherently scattering domain size (crystallite size). XPS is mainly used to determine - oxidation state, surface chemical composition. Their field of application is non-overlapping, therefore can not be compared.
In XPS, the atoms of the samples surface absorb X-rays and emit electrons, but in XRF the atoms of the sample both absorb and emit X-rays.

Because XPS is a surface technique, there is a limited amount of organic information XPS can provide. XPS is limited to measurements of elements having atomic numbers of 3 or greater, making it unable to detect hydrogen or helium. XPS spectra also take a long time to obtain.
