hello everyone my name is prashan and the topic for the todays video is cleaning up old amis and this we are going to do with the help of boto3 so i think most of you who is using aws must be aware of what is ami or amazon machine image and in the layman term it is just the image which is used to boot your operating system like earlier you used to have a dvd or cd where you used to keep the operating system image and these operating system image can be uh can be of linux and maybe red head or ubuntu or it may be a windows or maybe the aws provided that a provided ami now in most of the organizations you have some kind of automation process like with the help of a packer or now we have the aws ami builder through which you are constantly creating these amis and one of the main reason for that is to take a backup or in case if something goes bad you need to revert to the known words known good state and because of this continuous cicd process your aws bill will shoot up because your ami

What is an AMI stands for?

An Amazon Machine Image (AMI) is a supported and maintained image provided by AWS that provides the information required to launch an instance. You must specify an AMI when you launch an instance. You can launch multiple instances from a single AMI when you require multiple instances with the same configuration.

How do you ensure AMI is secure?

All AMIs must adhere to the following security policies: AMIs must not contain any known vulnerabilities, malware, or viruses as detected by the self-service AMI scanning tool or AWS Security. AMIs must use currently supported operating systems and other software packages.

What is the difference between AMI and snapshot?

A snapshot is of an EBS volume where you are able to save state and reboot with the same data at a certain point in time. An AMI is similar, but its for the EC2 instances themselves. You cannot take a snapshot of a non-ebs backed instance, but you can create an AMI (system image) of one.

Why is my instance slow?

There are many possible causes of slow or unresponsive EC2 instances when CPU and memory arent fully used, including: Problems with an external service that your instance relies on. Disk thrashing. Network connectivity issues.

Why is my AMI taking so long?

If you changed a lot of data in your EBS or dont have a previous snapshot, it will take longer to create your AMI. Depending on the size of the volumes, it can take several minutes for the AMI-creation process to complete (sometimes up to 24 hours).

How do you check if AMI is being used?

Open the Amazon EC2 console at . In the navigation pane, choose AMIs. In the navigation pane, choose Snapshots, and select the snapshot (look for the AMI ID in the Description column). (Optional) If you are finished with an instance that you launched from the AMI, terminate it.

Why is AMI pending?

AMI is pending, and cannot be run. Launching EC2 instance failed. Cause: You might have just created your AMI (by taking a snapshot of a running instance or any other way), and it might not be available yet.

How do I protect my AMI from deletion?

Put the AMI in a separate AWS account where users can access it (via sharing), but have no permission to delete it.
