So how does an artist avoid the smudging headache? Let your dominant hand lead. Simply put, if you are right-handed, start your drawing at the upper left corner and move your way down to the lower right corner. Place a sheet of clean paper under your drawing hand. Use a mahl stick. Use a spray fixative.
Cleanup artists refine sketches that are roughly drawn (roughs) at the concept stage to a polished line drawing. They trace over the key drawings (keys) in solid lines, paying close attention to retain the essence of the original sketch.
Paper mask: A piece of paper placed under the hand can serve as a shield to prevent transferring skin oils to the drawing, and can protect against smudges. Any piece of paper will do in a pinch, but thin, smooth stock is best. Carefully place the mask over the drawing, under your hand, and move it gradually as needed.
Keeping your drawing clean through completion is incredibly important. The last thing you want is to work hard on your drawing only to have your hand smear the work you created. Your hands contain oils that mix with the material and make the smearing that happens hard to erase and ugly.
Tips to Keeping Your Drawing Clean Work on your drawing from top to bottom - Starting at the top of your paper and then working down will help keep your hands out of the way of the drawing action. This will go a long way to keeping your drawing clean.
The best tip I can give you to get nice smooth lines is to try and make them in one single slow and steady stroke and to avoid the reflex most beginners have of doing several hasty and short strokes to outline simple shapes and curves. Another thing to avoid is erasing your lines too much.
Clean-up in animation is the process of making the final drawings or images that will be used in the movie. After the rough sketches are done, artists go over them and make them look nice and neat.
