Yes, your employer can change or even cancel your severance amount if you do not have a contract detailing how your severance package is calculated. If you do not have an agreement, you employer has full discretion to determine how much to offer, to change the offer, or to simply not offer a severance package.
There is no legal requirement under California law that employers provide severance pay to an employee upon termination of employment. Employees should refer to their employers policy with respect to severance pay.

As noted at the start, it is a good idea to ask for severance pay to be paid out as a lump sum so that you can get the most out of the payment, can have finality, and you wont run into a situation where you end up getting less severance pay than initially promised.
Under California law, severance pay is not considered wages for unemployment purposes. Instead, it is considered a payment in recognition of your past service. Even if it is paid out in installments, as yours will be, it doesnt count against your unemployment.
What Should You Do with Your Severance Pay? Do not immediately spend it! Consider your new financial situation. Save six months of expenses. Invest in yourself. Pay down debts. Give yourself permission to think of big ideas.
A generous severance package might include: Pay. It is standard to be paid for any accrued vacation time and also to be offered an additional lump sum, usually two weeks of pay for every year at the company.
