DOC file extension refers to a word processing document format. This binary file format is proprietary of Microsoft and is native to Microsoft's most popular word processing application, Microsoft Word. It's a plain text document format which can also contain hyperlinks, images, alignments, etc.
There are no macros in your DOCX file! There are no macros stored in the DOCX file itself. They are stored in a separate file called $helpman-word-helper-macros. dotm, that is generated together with the Word file. The macro warning you see comes from this helper document.
Microsoft 365 files that have a macro in them have a different file extension to indicate that they have an embedded macro. For example, a normal modern Word document is a . DOCX file, but if a macro is added to the file it's saved as a . DOCM file.
DOCM files are Microsoft Word 2007 or higher generated documents with the ability to run macros. It is similar to DOCX file format but the ability to run macros makes it different from DOCX. Like DOCX, DOCM files can be store text, images, tables, shapes, charts and other contents.
How to Change DOCM Files to DOC Press "Ctrl-O" in Microsoft Word and double-click the DOCM file to open it. Press "File" and then "Save As." Click the "Save as Type" drop-down menu and select "Word 97-2003 Document (*. doc)." Click "Save" to save the file with same name, but with the DOC extension.
Word defaults to save with the file extension . docx, which doesn't allow macros to automatically run. If you want the macro to run, you'll need to change the file type to Word Macro-Enabled Document (*. docm).
DOCX is definitely the better option compared to DOC. The newer format creates smaller, lighter, and easier to open, read, and transfer files. It is also easier to repair a damaged .
docx— An ordinary document containing no macros. . docm— A document that either contains macros or is macro enabled.
In Word, you can automate frequently used tasks by creating and running macros. A macro is a series of commands and instructions that you group together as a single command to accomplish a task automatically.
The macro settings are not changed for all your Microsoft 365 programs. Click the File tab. Click Options. Click Trust Center, and then click Trust Center Settings. In the Trust Center, click Macro Settings. Make the selections that you want, then click OK.
