Certified C.L.E.A.N. stands for Conscious, Live, Ethical, Active and Nourishing. The only apparent difference between R.A.W. and C.L.E.A.N. is that C.L.E.A.N. doesn't specify 212 degrees F as the upper limit of production temperature, but it still requires minimally-processed ingredients.
Clean-in-place (CIP) is an automated method of cleaning the interior surfaces of pipes, vessels, equipment, filters and associated fittings, without major disassembly. CIP is commonly used for equipment such as piping, tanks, and fillers.
Food processing equipment is either cleaned-in-place (CIP) and cleaned-out-of-place (COP).
Typically CIP systems operate at approximately 140°F-180°F. That means the temperature on the source header coming out of the CIP is even higher. Temperature should be considered carefully when designing a system.
The CIP process usually involves a caustic wash, which is followed by an acid wash and then a sanitizer. Stainless steel has been the most commonly used material for food contact surfaces in the food industry. Nitric acid with other acids or surfactants is the most common acid used in the industry.
CLEAN-OUT-OF-PLACE (COP) Manufacturers use COP methods for pieces of equipment and utensils that cannot be cleaned where they are used and must be disassembled, and for pieces of equipment and parts that do not lend themselves to easy cleaning in place. Fittings, clamps, impellers, hoses, etc.
If you want to have a good CIP process, then you need to pay attention to the five T's--Temperature, Turbidity, Technology, Time, and Titration. Temperature is important for solubility. Water that is hot can dissolve and absorb more material than cold water.
COP systems are used to clean small pieces of equipment that wouldn't be touched by a CIP systems. These includes: fittings, clamps, product handling utensils, tank vents, pump rotors, impellers, casings, hoses, etc. CIP systems clean and sanitize hard to reach interior surfaces of process equipment and structures.
Cleaning in Place, usually abbreviated to CIP, is a technique in which tanks (or other production components) are automatically cleaned without the need to detach or move parts of the tank. These CIP systems are increasingly replacing manual cleaning processes in a diversity of industries.
CIP Systems pump cleaning, rinsing, and sanitizing solutions through the same piping path as the product to eliminate product soil from all internal surfaces.
