The Clean Hydrogen ITC was among five tax credits that Ottawa announced in the March 2023 federal budget. The collective aim of these credits is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and attract investment in Canadian clean energy in order to compete with the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act.
Use the CRAs chart of classes and list of capital property to determine which classes your purchases fall into. Group your expenses together by class, and add them together. Then, multiply the total in each class by its rate. The result is the CCA you can claim for the year.
Class 57 and 58 property (capture, transportation, storage, and use) allows for CCUS tax credits to be disregarded in determining the cost of property for these two classes. The CCUS-ITC does not depreciate the net amount for the respective CCA classes.
Class 54 was created for zero-emission vehicles that would otherwise be included in Class 10 or 10.1, with the same CCA rate of 30%. Class 55 was created for zero-emission vehicles otherwise included in Class 16, with the same CCA rate of 40%. The CCA still applies on a declining-balance basis.
Limits on CCA In the year you acquire rental property, you can usually claim CCA only on one-half of your net additions to a class. This is the half-year rule (also known as the 50% rule) which the CRA explains under Column 15 Adjustment for current year additions subject to the half year rule.
The Clean Technology ITC: A refundable tax credit of up to 30% of investments in eligible property acquired and available for use on or after March 28, 2023 and before 2034. For property that becomes available for use in 2034, this tax credit would be up to 15%.
CECs are electronic certificates used to demonstrate that clean energy from Ontario based generation has been acquired, to meet a voluntary target. Each credit represents 1 MWh of clean energy that has been generated and is intended to be exclusively purchased and claimed (or retired) by a load customer within Ontario.
Class 56. This class includes automotive equipment not designed for use on highways or streets such as zero-emission aircraft, watercraft, trolley buses, and railway locomotives.
