Ideally, give the person three to four weeks, but never less than two weeks to complete the recommendation.
Ideally, you will want to ask for recommendation letters no later than two to three months before you plan on submitting your primary application (i.e., AMCAS). Therefore, if you plan to submit AMCAS in June, you should ask no later than the beginning of May.
The letter must outline why you would be a good doctor, your professional strengths, your passion for medicine, and any other memorable skills and characteristics that make you stand out. For example, if a physician observed your excellent interactions with patients, this should be mentioned in the letter.
While the letter should be no less than a page and no more than three pages, anywhere in this range is acceptable. Its important that the letter writer prioritizes quality over quantity. If a one-page letter has all the content needed for an excellent recommendation letter, theres no need to add to the word count.
Your medical school letter of intent neednt be verbose; it should be a brief (500-600 word, or roughly 1 page) document. If youve interviewed at a school that is truly your #1 school, writing a letter of this kind allows you to show the school that you are a serious and enthusiastic candidate.
Submit four individual letters. This option requires three letters written by academic sources (i.e., professor or research advisor) and one personal or professional letter. Letters from political sources are not recommended. A minimum of three and a maximum of six individual letters of recommendation is required.
