DNACPR is sometimes called DNAR (do not attempt resuscitation) or DNR (do not resuscitate) but they all refer to the same thing. DNACPR means if your heart or breathing stops your healthcare team will not try to restart it. A DNACPR decision is made by you and/or your doctor or healthcare team.
What is an SB 11 DNR order? Statute: Sec. 166.201. In this subchapter, DNR order means an order instructing a health care professional not to attempt cardiopulmonary resuscitation on a patient whose circulatory or respiratory function ceases.
There is no requirement for a written directive from pediatric patients. SB 11 dictates that, for a DNR order to be valid, it must be in compliance with certain criteria, some of which are: Written and dated directions from a competent patient or patient who was competent at the time the directive was completed.
Did you know that there are two different types of DNR orders that can be chosen? The first is the DNR Comfort Care (DNRCC) and the other is the DNR Comfort Care- Arrest (DNRCC-Arrest).
The form is designed to be easily recognised and verifiable, allowing healthcare professionals to make decisions quickly about how to treat you. Its not a legally binding document. Instead, it helps you to communicate to the healthcare professionals involved in your care that CPR shouldnt be attempted.
To use the sharing features on this page, please enable JavaScript. A do-not-resuscitate order, or DNR order, is a medical order written by a doctor. It instructs health care providers not to do cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) if a patients breathing stops or if the patients heart stops beating.
You can say: We have agreed that the goals of care are to keep you comfortable and get you home. With this in mind, I do not recommend the use of artificial or heroic means to keep you alive. If you agree with this, I will write an order in the chart that if you die, no attempt to resuscitate you will be made.
How long is the DNACPR form valid for? Indefinite DNACPR orders are just that - they do not have an expiry date. Does an indefinite DNACPR order ever need to be reviewed? It is good practice to review the decision whenever the patients condition changes and prior to any proposed move between care settings.
However, only a physical, the patient, or the patients healthcare agent can revoke a DNR. The only instance in which a family member can revoke a DNR is when that same family member is also the patients healthcare agent.
Bottom Line: Health care providers may be held liable if they fail to follow a patients DNR or MOLST orders. To prevent this type of lawsuit, make sure your institution has training and procedures in place for handling DNR/MOLST orders.
