Semmelweis observed that, among women in the first division of the clinic, the death rate from childbed fever was two or three times as high as among those in the second division, although the two divisions were identical with the exception that students were taught in the first and midwives in the second.
Semmelweis wanted to figure out why so many women in maternity wards were dying from puerperal fever commonly known as childbed fever. He studied two maternity wards in the hospital. One was staffed by all male doctors and medical students, and the other was staffed by female midwives.
In the 19th century, Ignaz Semmelweis realised the importance of cleanliness in hospitals. However, although his ideas were successful, they were ignored at the time because people did not know that diseases were caused by pathogens that could be killed. Antiseptics therefore help to prevent the spread of disease.
Most of the objections from Semmelweiss critics stemmed from his claim that every case of childbed fever was caused by resorption of cadaveric particles. Some of Semmelweiss first critics even responded that he had said nothing new - it had long been known that cadaveric contamination could cause childbed fever.
Dr. Semmelweiss behavior became more and more erratic and he was finally committed to an insane asylum on July 30, 1865. He died there, two weeks later, on Aug. 13, 1865, at the age of 47.
Answer and Explanation: The main reason why Ignaz Semmelweis was not taken seriously by his peers is that his idea was in conflict with the theory of disease that was accepted back then.
Many doctors were outraged when he accused them of being the cause of their patients miserable deaths. Consequently, Semmelweis was largely ignored, rejected, or mocked at; eventually, doctors gave up chlorine hand-washing, and he lost his job.
Sadly, Semmelweiss was committed to an insane asylum when he started to exhibit what was possibly the early onset of Alzheimers disease. While there he was beaten by the staff and died from his injuries.
Unfortunately, Semmelweiss ideas were not accepted by all of his colleagues. Indeed, many were outraged at the suggestion that they were the cause of their patients miserable deaths. Consequently, Semmelweis met with enormous resistance and criticism.
Reaction to Semmelweis Discovery His colleagues and other medical professionals refused to accept his findings mainly because they did not find it convincing that they could be responsible for spreading infections.
