An arrow with tallow and little or no blood could indicate a superficial wound. However, always follow up by searching for blood and tracking the deer as far as possible; it is possible for an arrow to wipe almost clean as it exits the deer.
Scenario 1: Bright Red/Pinkish Blood with Bubbles This is exactly what you want to see after every shot, aside from actually seeing the buck fall. Bright red blood almost always indicates a shot to the vitals (lungs or heart).
Cleaning the inside of carbon and aluminum shafts It is very important to clean the inside of the shaft using a cotton swab dipped in denatured alcohol. Continue cleaning, using new cotton swabs, until no traces of black residue remain.
The color of the blood, hair samples, or the smell on the arrow can often tell you exactly where you hit. Dark red blood typically means a liver hit. Pink, frothy blood almost always means a lung hit. Bright red blood may be heart, arteries, or muscle.
Tallow is often found on arrows that pass through the brisket, located on the bottom of the deers chest cavity, or high on the back. An arrow with tallow and little or no blood could indicate a superficial wound.
Determine what the blood tells you. Bright pink blood with bubbles indicates a shot through the heart or lung(s). Begin tracking in about an hour. Dark red blood indicates a liver shot. Brown tinted blood indicates a stomach shot. Very bright red blood indicates a muscle shot deer with no organ damage.
Bright red blood indicates bleeding from arteries. Darker blood indicates bleeding from veins. Blood that has bubbles or looks frothy could indicate a lung hit. Fluid that is greenish, has tallow, or is clear can indicate an intestinal shot.
You can use either denatured alcohol or acetone to clean your arrow shafts and ensure a good fletching bond.
