- So how was a heart failure diagnosed? So first of all you you take a good medical history. And what does a good medical history? First of all you want to look, I ask for questions about risk factors. Are they diabetic? Do they have high blood pressure? And you do a drug history to kind of clue you in, whats theirs, how high is your suspicion for this patient having heart failure? And then you do an exam, a physical exam. A lot of times if and many of you know someone with heart failure we always look at the neck. And why are we doing that? So we have whats called the vein here at the internal jugular vein which is like a dipstick that drains right into the heart. So you can imagine if a patient has back up of fluid its gonna, its gonna become very prominent and thats what were gonna see on our exam. Fluid Restriction You should limit your total fluid intake to 2 quarts (64 oz or 8 cups) per day. This is to help keep your body from retaining fluid.
Adults age 65 and older are more likely than younger people to suffer from cardiovascular disease, which is problems with the heart, blood vessels, or both. Aging can cause changes in the heart and blood vessels that may increase a persons risk of developing cardiovascular disease.
Fluid restriction means that you need to limit the amount of liquid you have each day. Fluid restriction is needed if your body is holding water. This is called fluid retention. Fluid retention can cause health problems, such as tissue and blood vessel damage, long-term swelling, and stress on the heart.
Men generally develop CVD at a younger age and have a higher propensity of developing coronary heart disease (CHD) than women. Women, in contrast, are at a higher risk of stroke, which often occurs at older age.
Symptoms of heart failure include: Shortness of breath. Feeling tired (fatigue) and having leg weakness when youre active. Swelling in your ankles, legs and abdomen. Weight gain. Need to urinate while resting at night. Rapid or irregular heartbeats (palpitations). A dry, hacking cough.
Aging predisposes to a high incidence and prevalence of coronary artery disease (CAD) in both men and women. Aging is associated with cellular oxidative stress, inflammation, and shifts in gene expression that contribute to increased vascular stiffness, endothelial dysfunction, and thrombogenicity.
Aging can weaken and stiffen your heart. People 65 years or older have a higher risk of heart failure. Older adults are also more likely to have other health conditions that cause heart failure. Family history of heart failure makes your risk of heart failure higher.
Tests needed to assess CCF include x rays, echocardiography, ECG, coronary angiography and others. Treatment for CCF includes treatment of the underlying cause of CCF, as well as the symptoms. This can include any of the treatments in this list: medicines.
Elderly patients who experience heart failure are likely to already have a chronic cardiovascular condition, but it can also be caused by physical decline due to aging and poor cardiovascular management throughout life. Other risk factors include obesity, a family history of heart failure, hypertension and diabetes.
Your health care provider may ask you to lower the amount of fluids you drink: When your heart failure is not very bad, you may not have to limit your fluids too much. As your heart failure gets worse, you may need to limit fluids to 6 to 9 cups (1.5 to 2 liters) a day.
