At the end of chapter 2, Lennie is as excited as a little child about Slim's puppies. Lennie wants George to ask Slim if he can have a brown and white puppy. Chapter 3 is about relationships. The author's purpose is to show how unusual George and Lennie's relationship is for this time period.
Slim is angry at Curley for constantly asking about his wife. Curley, on the defensive and looking for someone to fight, picks a fight with Lennie and punches him unmercifully. Lennie doesn't protect himself until George tells him to fight back. When Lennie does, he crushes all the bones in Curley's hand.
George tries to steer Lennie away from conflict, but in Chapter Three the conflict between Curley and Lennie reaches a boiling point. The man vs. man conflict intensifies when Lennie, after being bludgeoned by Curley's fists, fights back and breaks all the bones in Curley's hand.
Foreshadowing Of Mice and Men 's tragic conclusion is heavily foreshadowed from the very beginning of the novella. ... Curley's first appearance in Of Mice and Men foreshadows that he will pick a fight with Lennie in which Lennie will crush his hand. ... George's shooting of Lennie is foreshadowed throughout Of Mice and Men .
During their conversation, Lennie reveals the secret about the farm, which Crooks initially thinks Lennie is making up. Crooks also prods Lennie about his relationship with George and scares Lennie by suggesting that George might not come back. The more Crooks presses Lennie, the more Lennie becomes scared and upset.
In Chapter Two, we see foreshadowing in terms of Curley's wife; we see the foreshadowing of Candy's dog being shot, and we also see the foreshadowing of an altercation between Lennie and Curley.
In this chapter we learn that Curley is a mean little guy who was a boxer and who is recently married. He doesn't like Lennie right away, supposedly because Lennie is bigger than Curley. Curley's wife is pretty and she is also a flirt.
In chapter three, George tells Slim what happened in Weed between Lennie and a lady when he was feeling her skirt. The stable hand (Crook) comes in and Slim leaves with him. Then, some of the ranch workers go out and shoot Candy's dog to put it out of its misery.
In chapter 4 the foreshadowing begins when Candy says "You let this guy alone. Don't you do no messing aroun' with him" (81). This is foreshadowing because Candy is talking to Curley's wife about Lennie and he clearly tells her to stay away.
During the conversation, Lennie tells Crooks about the dream of owning a farm. Crooks doesn't believe that it will ever happen. He starts to question the relationship between George and Lennie. During this conversation, Crooks asks Lennie what he would do if George got hurt.
