You can apply for a new MMSI when licensing your vessel with Ofcom. Once an MMSI is registered with Ofcom, the ITU and the MCA are informed so if searched on the ITU (International Telecommunications Union) MARS database (Maritime Access retrieval system) your MMSI number will appear.
Marine radiotelephones fitted onboard Canadian vessels, must be operated by a person holding a Radio Operators Certificate ( ROC-M ).
You usually need to get a licence if you: play recorded music in public or at your business (including background music on a CD, radio or music channel) stage live music events in public (for example, a concert or festival) play live or recorded music in a theatre.
Handheld VHF/DSC radios require a special Licence. This licence enables the operator to use any handheld marine VHF/DSC radio which is not permanently fitted to a vessel. The Licence number will be prefixed with the letter T (Transportable) and will be subject to checks for correct details every ten years.
VHF radio licences are free, you just need to go to .ofcom.org.uk and select Marine VHF. You will also need an operators licence for at least one person aboard, usually the skipper. This is administered by the RYA who can advise you where to take the relevant course and exam.
The Ship Radio Licence What it authorises. 2.2 The Ship Radio Licence authorises the installation and use of maritime radio and associated equipment, as well as non-maritime radio equipment (such as a mobile phone picocell) on a named ship, subject to applicable licence conditions.
Your vessel also needs a Ships Radio Licence. In the UK these are issued by Ofcom. See the Ofcom Licensing Centre for more details. The licence lasts for 10 years and is free as long as you apply online (20 by post).
If you use a radio system for your business, you need a licence from Ofcom. Business radio users range from taxi companies and factories, to hospitals, care homes, industrial sites and transport operators. Apply online for a new business radio licence. Pay for your licence.
